Course Tutor(s):  Karl Leonard is an experienced weaver who operates under the name of ‘Rakai’. Karl has learnt this method and practises from kuia Maata Wharehoka who developed the concept in 2004. 

Purpose of the Course: “Our whanau are working diligently at preserving and maintaining some of our ancient Maori practices for those who choose to accept there is a place for non-embalming and no coffin in our burial practices,” said Mrs Wharehoka.

  • By the end of this course learners will;

    – Have learnt the basics of weaving kahu whakatere

    – Have increased confidence with the use of te reo māori around this type of raranga

Other Information:  Marae accommodation is available at Te Ore ore Marae and all meals are provided. You are expected to stay for the duration of the wānanga.

Pre-requisites (if any):  Experience in weaving is preferred.

Participants Must Provide: Bring your own tools particularly florist combs if you have them. Bedding including sheets, pillow and cases, toiletries and any medication. Comfortable, warm clothing.
