#38474 TOI WHATU (PAHIATUA),

Whatu is the main technique used to weave kakahu (Māori cloaks). Come along to this course and explore this form of weaving, and its variations. By the end of this course learners will have completed poi piu and a small maro using traditional methods and materials .

Please note:  this course is not for beginners – will suit weavers who have experience with Haaro or extracting Muka.

Course Information for #38474 Toi Whatu, starting 5th May

Course Tutor(s):  Mel Reiri.  Experienced weaver, holds a Bachelor of Māori Art (Maunga kura toi) accreditation.

Purpose of the Course: By the end of this course, participants will:

    • Have a basic understanding of Te Reo Māori kupu associated with whatu and raranga.
    • Have a good knowledge of how to harvest, prepare and weave with muka harakeke.
    • Have a good understanding of tikanga (protocol) surrounding the use of harakeke and whatu
    • Have demonstrated basic whatu techniques by completing two projects – poi piu and a small maro

Pre-requisites (if any):  Not for beginner weavers – Whatu classes are for people who have experience with Haaro (extracting muka).
